Edoardo De Tommasi is currently involved in three main research activities: 1. Optical characterization of micro- and nano-porous biological materials. In particular photonic and optical properties of silica shells of diatom micro-algae, which present strong analogies with artificial photonic crystals, are investigated in order to eventually obtain bio-inspired micro- and nano-devices. 2. Exploitation of metallized micro- and nano-porous biomaterials in Surface Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy, and, more generally, in plasmonics. 3. Generation of optical vortices and study of their interaction with Photonic Crystals supporting Bound States in the Continuum (BICs).
Edoardo De Tommasi was born in Ambilly, France, in 1978. He received the Laurea degree (summa cum laude) in Physics from the University of Naples Federico II, Napoli, Italy, in 2002. From December 2002 until March 2003 he worked for the National Institute for Biosystems and Biostructures, Italy, developing a glucose biosensor based on the fluorescence properties of the enzyme glucose-oxidase. From April 2003 until September 2003 he studied, with the financial support of Istituto Superiore di Sanità, Rome, Italy, the metabolism of multi-cell osteosarcoma spheroids by means of confocal and two-photon fluorescence microscopy. From November 2003 until November 2006 he worked at the Environmental Science Department of the Second University of Naples, Caserta, Italy, where he received the PhD degree in "Novel Physical Methodologies for Ecological Research" . His activities where focused on the development of a portable ammonia analyzer based on diode-laser absorption spectroscopy and on the elaboration of numerical models for signal analysis in wavelength-modulation spectroscopy. From December 2006 until December 2009 he has been employed at IMM, Unit of Naples, as post-doc fellow. His activities comprised the development and characterization of optical biosensors based on porous silicon technology; the ellispometric and optical characterization of bio/non-bio interfaces. In 2010 he worked as post-doc fellow at the National Institute for Optics, Unit of Naples, where he devoted himself to non-linear optics for high-resolution laser spectroscopy. Since February 2011 Edoardo De Tommasi has been appointed Scientific Head of the CNR-IMM Unit of the FIRB Project "Future in Research" aimed at the study of photonic properties of marine diatoms, and in March 2013 he has been appointed Scientific Head of another FIRB Project, aimed at the realization of a device, based on Photonic Crystals, for manipulation, trapping and spectroscopic interrogation of single molecules.
